New Procedure Allows Kidney Transplants From Any Donor
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/10/hea...
“In the anguishing wait for a new kidney, tens of thousands of patients on waiting lists may never find a match because their immune systems will reject almost any transplanted organ. Now, in a large national study that experts are calling revolutionary, researchers have found a way to get them the desperately needed procedure.”
Survival Benefit with Kidney Transplants from HLA-Incompatible Live Donors
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/...
“Recipients of kidney transplants from incompatible live donors had a higher survival rate than either control group at 1 year (95.0%, vs. 94.0% for the waiting-list-or-transplant control group and 89.6% for the waiting-list-only control group)[...]”
Transplant rejection
https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...
“When a person receives an organ from someone else during transplant surgery, that person's immune system may recognize that it is foreign. This is because the person's immune system detects that the antigens on the cells of the organ are different or not "matched." Mismatched organs, or organs that are not matched closely enough, can trigger a blood transfusion reaction or transplant rejection.”
